2006 chevrolet impala review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New structure, new styling, new interior. introductionthe impala has been changing, morphing, and maturing with the vagaries of the market since 1958 when the first one showed up as a coupe and convertible.  now, the chevrolet impala has been substantially upgraded for 2006. The 2006 impala features new and very attractive exterior styling, a new interior, and a choice of three new engines.  the new impala is a comfortable and convenient car, roomy, easy to get in, with big grab-style door handles. It's a practical sedan with innovative flip-and-fold back seats and folding rear seatbacks. And it comes well-equipped with safety features, including side-curtain airbags. The impala lt best exemplifies the model line, especially when ordered with the larger, 3. 9-liter engine, which delivers responsive performance. The ltz upgrades with leather, a very nice xm satellite radio setup and other convenience features.  an inexpensive pricing structure with loads of rebates on it puts the new impala on the shopping list for family sedans. Impala competes with the ford five hundred, chrysler 300, dodge charger, honda accord, toyota camry, and nissan altima.  the ss stuffs a small-block v8 into this package. It comes with the bare essentials, such as air conditioning, power windows and locks, am/fm/cd, cruise control, cloth upholstery, a bench seat, and 16-inch steel wheels. Anti-lock brakes are optional 600).  the lt is available with the 3. 5-liter v6 21,860) or a new 3. 9-liter v6 24,760), which includes 17-inch alloy wheels. The ss comes with 18-inch wheels and tires and a performance suspension.  safety features that come standard include dual front smart air bags, and side-curtain roof-mounted air bags. Underneath, it gets a stiff new body and chassis structure, retuned suspensions with a 10-mm wider track, and new 16-, 17- and 18-inch wheels and tires.  the ls, lt and ltz share one front end design, while the ss has a completely different nose architecture. interiorthe new impala has a lot going for it inside as well, with a completely new, cleaned-up interior, reshaped and reupholstered seats, and flip/fold rear seats.  we felt pretty comfortable overall inside the impala. The seats have firmer cushions and increased lumbar support than previous models. We didn't find the ss seats particularly comfortable or supportive, with too much lumbar support and not enough side bolstering to retain the upper body in corners. Optional leather-covered seating has a new style of seams around the perimeter and french seams on the center sections.  the impala also has a new twin-brow instrument panel design that wraps around into the door panels. Ls, lt and ltz models have a wood trim, with brushed silver trim optional. The impala ss comes standard with metallic trim panels, with wood trim as an option. We found the panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. We found the interior materials at least one grade better than the usual chevrolet stuff.  the optional dual-zone climate control system can have up to a 12-degree temperature difference side-to-side. It's a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The dashboard has an expanded driver information center, now with more than 50 different alerts, depending on the vehicle's equipment. The base audio system includes am/fm/cd and six speakers. An optional mp3/cd-radio is configured for xm satellite radio, with a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between am, fm and xm. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. The optional icdx radio adds an in-dash six-cd changer. All radios include a standard auxiliary input jack for external devices such as an ipod or remote cassette player.  the rear seat is roomy and comfortable for two adults or three kids, but not three adults. The rear seat cushions flip forward to create a covered storage area under the seat (with cushions down) and grocery bag hooks when the cushions are flipped. The seatback also folds down flat to create a large pass-through port to the trunk.  trunk space, at 18. 5 cubic feet, is more than competitive in the segment, and it has a huge opening for easy loading. driving impressionthe new chevrolet impala comes with a new generation of v6 engines. We found them to be smooth and quiet if not bristling with power. Variable valve timing is a first for the impala's cam-in-block v6 engines. The system changes the orientation of the camshaft, automatically adjusting the timing of the intake and exhaust valves for better performance, economy, and emissions. Thus, a system that started out on very expensive imported cars has now reached down to the lowly chevy v6 engines and made them better.  the 3. 5-liter v6 that comes on lt and ls models generates 211 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque. The 3. 9-liter v6 that comes on ls and ltz models produces 242 horsepower and 242 pound-feet of torque. We're expecting both engines to earn fuel economy ratings of about 19/29 mpg city/highway.  with 303 horsepower, the impala ss has more power and torque than any other entry in the class, but the chassis that comes with the v8 needs taming. While we appreciated the extra power and torque available in a kickdown or passing situation, and we loved the brawny, muscular sound of this engine at full throttle, it's a challenge to launch cleanly and quickly at the same time. Besides wheelspin, there's a lot of torque steering. This system helps provide up to 8 percent better fuel economy in light-load driving conditions. However, there is a lot of pitch, dive, and body roll in this chassis, and a lot of uncertain driving moments with the added power of the ss. Steering is over-assisted, fairly numb and uncommunicative.  the impala's front suspension is a macpherson strut coil-over-spring independent design, with gas-charged struts and a stabilizer bar with new, taller jounce bumpers. The rear suspension uses a trailing arm, tri-link setup with gas-charged struts and coil springs. A rear stabilizer bar is standard on all models. The new abs includes electronic brake-force distribution. summarythe new chevrolet impala represents an improvement over previous models. The 3. 5 and 3. 9 v6 lt and ltz versions are pleasing to drive overall. While the ss cuts a conservative but dashing figure with its quiet badging and giant five-spoke, 18-inch wheels, it's got more power than it k. 2009 chevrolet impala review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Big, roomy and practical. introductionthe chevrolet impala is a big, roomy sedan. While classified as a mid-size sedan, it's large for that class. Close in size to the toyota avalon, it competes with mid-size and full-size cars. Among them: the ford taurus, chrysler 300, dodge charger, honda accord, toyota camry, and nissan altima.  for 2009 the impala gains significant safety enhancements: thorax side-impact airbags, seatbelt pretensioners for front-seat lap belts and anti-lock brakes with traction control are now standard on all models. Bluetooth is available, the impala ss gets 18-inch flangeless alloy wheels and there are three new exterior colors.  we find the impala's neat, clean lines pleasing to the eye. Its styling looks contemporary, handsome, and clean. Other people must think so as well, as the impala is among the top-10 best-selling cars in the u. S.  this is a roomy car, in the front as well as the back seats, and getting in and out is easy. The impala has a big trunk with a big lid that makes loading cargo easy, and it has a healthy cargo capacity. Optional flip-and-fold rear seats are exclusive in its class, and provide not only holding wells for groceries but a flat cargo floor that expands the trunk for long items.  on the road, the impala is very stable, a nice cruiser. There's lots of low-end torque from the larger of the two available v6 engines, a 3. 9-liter v6 with advanced technologies. Step on the gas and it goes. Given its size, the impala handles well, and surprisingly so.  several trim levels are available, ranging from a strong, reliable, fuel-efficient family sedan to a sleek and powerful performance car. Depending upon trim level, there are three engine choices, two v6s and a v8.  chevrolet continues to improve and upgrade the impala. We highly recommend the stabilitrak electronic stability control. Onstar is standard, and in its latest version it will automatically communicate the nature and severity of a crash as well as its location to the 911 centers.  overall, the chevrolet impala is a comfortable and convenient car, practical and enjoyable to drive. Options include an engine block heater 75), 40/20/40 front bench seat 195) and a dvd player 1,735).  the 1lt 24,645) upgrades to 16-inch aluminum wheels and more interior conveniences. Options include leather upholstery 1,125) on bench or bucket seats, eight-speaker bose audio system 495), sunroof 900), universal garage door opener 100), and rear spoiler 275).  the 1lt luxury edition package 2,465) includes leather trim, an upgraded onstar with directions and connections and turn-by-turn navigation, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, flip-and-fold rear seat, and a rear spoiler.  the 2lt 27,110) includes the equipment of the previous levels, plus fog lamps, dual exhausts, stabilitrak stability control system, remote starter, rear spoiler, and 17-inch machined alloy wheels.  ltz 29,630) comes standard with the 3. 9-liter v6 and the same fe3 performance suspension as the ss model (see below). The ss comes with 18-inch forged flangeless aluminum wheels with p235/50r18 tires, fe3 performance suspension, and leather-appointed bucket seats. An optional convenience package 240) includes homelink universal garage door opener and heated power mirrors.  safety features that come standard on all impalas include dual front airbags, side-curtain roof-mounted air bags for front- and rear-seat passengers, thorax side-impact airbags, and anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and traction control. Stabilitrak is offered for the first time on an impala and is standard on 2lt, ltz, and ss. A tire-pressure monitor is standard. walkaroundthe 2009 chevrolet impala presents a clean, neat, pleasing design that's not so homogenized as to be boring. It's an attractive car.  the big headlamps have a premium, jeweled appearance with three independent lighting units and are smoothly integrated into the front end. The tail lights are nicely integrated as well. Flat-blade windshield wipers provide consistent pressure on the glass, which helps eliminate streaking and wind noise.  the ls, lt and ltz are distinguished by exterior trim but share one front end design, while the ss sports a unique grille with ss-signature black-diamond crosshatch pattern. The impala ss also features corvette-inspired bright exhaust tips. A rear spoiler is standard on ltz and ss models, and is available on lt. interiorthe 2009 impala has a lot going for it inside as well. The standard seats have fairly firm cushions and decent lumbar support compared to previous models. We didn't find the ss seats particularly comfortable or supportive; lumbar support is too aggressive, while there's not enough side bolstering to retain the upper body in corners.  a twin-brow instrument panel wraps around into the doors. Impala ls, lt and ltz models have wood trim, with brushed silver trim a no-cost option on lt and ltz. The ss comes standard with unique metallic trim panels, with wood as an option. We found the instrument panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. Interior materials are a grade above average.  the dual-zone climate control system is a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. It can support up to a 12-degree temperature difference side-to-side. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The glovebox is large enough to actually hold stuff.  the base audio system comes with six speakers, am/fm/cd/mp3 capability, and xm satellite radio. It features speed-sensing volume control and a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between am, fm and xm. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. Too many radios nowadays are too complex or have tiny buttons difficult to operate underway. Not so with gm's radios. The impala sound system is sophisticated yet easy to operate. The optional system adds an in-dash six-cd changer. The premium audio system is bose. Turn-by-turn navigation directs the driver through the route by using the digital readout lines in the radio head. Directions are downloaded by the onstar advisor to the vehicle and can be played back or paused anywhere from start to destination. Besides being easy to use (all directions are downloaded to the car by an advisor) turn-by-turn is less expensive than a gps navigation system.  the back seat is roomy and comfortable for two adults or three kids, but not three adults. The forward-flipping rear seat cushions reveal a storage tub underneath that can contain spills or transport a variety of items. The tub also serves as a covered storage area beneath the seat with cushions down, and exposes convenient grocery bag hooks when the cushions are flipped forward. A generous pass-through from the trunk can be created by flipping the seat bottoms forward and the seat backs flat.  the trunk is larger than that of most mid-size cars, at 18. 6 cubic feet, and a huge trunk opening makes loading easier. driving impressionwe found the impala's v6 engines to be smooth and quiet if not bristling with power. They feature variable valve timing, which changes the orientation of the camshaft automatically, adjusting the timing of the intake and exhaust valves for better performance, economy, and emissions.  the 3. 5-liter e85-compatible v6 that's standard on ls and lt has variable valve timing and generates 211 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque. It gets an epa-rated 19/29 mpg city/highway on gasoline and 14/22 city/highway on e85 ethanol.  the 3. 9-liter e85-compatible v6 has variable valve timing and produces 233 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. The 3. 9-liter v6 ge.

2002 chevrolet impala review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Great family room with grand old name. introductionchevrolet impala is a modern, capable mid-size sedan, with a look and especially a name designed to push the nostalgia button for a certain generation.  from 1958-65, impala meant the flashiest full-size chevrolet, a real working-man's cadillac, tame in its base form but offering performance options to match its aggressive looks. After '65, the sporty impala was subordinated to the more conservative-looking caprice, and eventually the name disappeared from the chevrolet lineup.  like its older namesake, the new impala is tame and practical with base-level equipment. When ordered with its optional 3. 8-liter v6, however, this new impala is not only quick, but also more responsive than the six-seat models from toyota, dodge, ford and buick. The real difference between the base and ls is the level of luxury amenities on the standard-equipment list.  that's because the 3. 8-liter engine is optional on the base model 995). Whether base or ls, 3. 8-liter impalas come with aluminum wheels, quicker steering, traction control, and anti-lock brakes.  new for 2002 is the sport appearance package, which adds extra gauges to the instrument panel and its own unique look to the impala's front and rear ends, interior, and wheels.  abs is a $600 option on base models, an odd choice for chevrolet, when most other gm cars come with anti-lock brakes even in their most basic guise. The anti-lock brake system includes a tire-pressure monitor.  also standard on ls (optional on base impalas) is gm's onstar system. Onstar is a customer-service network linked to each car via satellite. The system can notify network representatives of the car's location, to facilitate roadside assistance or to help track the car if it is stolen. The impala is a whopping nine inches shorter than a dodge intrepid, yet it's slightly larger in total interior volume.  the most significant styling cues are the headlight and taillight clusters, which use a unique combination of round lights clearly visible from behind trapezoidal covers. Interior space was gained by designing a high roofline with more vertical sides, carefully rearranging the rear bulkhead, and moving the seats slightly outboard. New for 2002 is a leather-accented bench seat. They feel like bucket seats. But then the front-center passenger has to straddle the split between the seats. Controls are logical, work smoothly, and are easy to see. They follow the function of those in the smaller malibu, but they're bigger. New for 2002 are individual temperature controls for the driver and passenger.  although impala boasts more total interior volume than the dodge intrepid, the chevy's rear seat area is shorter on useable legroom. Still, the impala is better in this respect than the ford taurus or the even the full-size ford crown victoria. The impala's rear seating position is comfortable and relatively high, which makes it easy to get in and out. There are three shoulder belts in the rear, as well as latch child-seat tethers. A seat-mounted side-impact airbag is standard on ls and available as part of several option packages on the base model. driving impressionthe new impala feels like a big luxury car, even compared to a ford crown victoria or toyota avalon. The toyota feels bland by comparison.  the view out of the impala is good, and particularly helpful are the small quarter windows that split the rear pillars. The creases on the hood give a good perspective for judging where the front of the car is, handy for parking a big car in compact spaces. The rear deck lid seems high, however, so care is required when backing up.  handling is surprisingly quick and sharp. This is not the wallowing, live-axle barge from the 1960s. One reason is the use of a huge aluminum engine-cradle subframe, isolating vibrations while allowing for a more rigid structure. A monster dashboard bulkhead made of light and strong magnesium adds to rigidity, giving the car a robust feel. The engine cradle and dashboard structure lock the steering shaft down rigidly, so there are no excess wiggly movements. Chevy says a new link between the steering column and the steering gear contributes to better on-center feel at the wheel. Both base and ls models benefit from a strut brace in front, as well as anti-roll bars front and rear. This type of hardware is usually found only on sports sedans.  on the road, the steering feels good, better than the toyota avalon's. The ls we tested felt particularly good, with its quicker steering ratio.  likewise, the brake pedal feels firm and responsive. Chevy claims it will accelerate to 60 mph in 7. 7 seconds, which is quick for this class.  police-package impalas will get the higher-ratio gearing from the grand prix, and should be quicker still. The cops may even learn to like this car, even though front-drivers are still looked down upon by many of america's men in blue. The front steering knuckles for police versions are made of steel instead of weight-saving aluminum, though chevy says the aluminum knuckles (and the rest of the car) exceeded durability tests. summarythe impala delivers excellent value among mid-size sedans, with decent handling, immediately recognizable design cues, and a long list of amenities. It honors the heritage of the original impala, without reviving the old car's excessive bulk. Anti-lock Brakes✔ Bucket Seats✔ AM/FM✔ Aluminum Wheels
