2002 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New explorer seats seven. introductionall new for 2002, the ford explorer is better than the previous version in every respect. Handling and ride quality are improved with a new frame and an independent rear suspension. Performance is quicker with new or improved overhead-cam engines. It's a quieter, more refined vehicle with an all-new interior. New safety features are being introduced.  but the biggest news for the explorer is the availability of third-row seating, allowing it to carry up to seven passengers. It's roomier and more comfortable, benefits of its longer wheelbase, wider track and some clever engineering.  in spite of all this, the new explorer looks familiar inside and out. It seems the more things change, the more they stay the same. Xls and xlt come standard with cloth; eddie bauer and limited come with leather.  an overhead-cam v6 engine is now standard on all models, boosting the explorer's power considerably. A new overhead-cam v8 695) is optional on all models. Ford's new five-speed automatic transmission 1095) is optional. Xls does not offer some of the high-zoot options available on the other models, including the v8.  xlt 27,780) gets nicer sport cloth upholstery, a six-way power driver's seat, body-colored exterior trim, a cd stereo instead of cassette, and more interior features, such as a temperature gauge and compass, map lights and dome lights, outside approach lighting, extra power outlets, illuminated keypad for keyless entry. The new five-speed automatic transmission is standard, and aluminum alloy wheels replace steel wheels. Leather upholstery with a six-way power driver's seat is available for $655.  limited and eddie bauer models (both $34,055) come with leather seating surfaces, automatic dual-zone climate control, a 290-watt six-cd stereo with six speakers, adjustable power pedals, fog lights, and wider tires. Six-way adjustable heated power seats with dual manual lumbar supports are used in front, and the driver's seat has a three-position memory feature. Limited uses monochromatic bumpers, moldings and cladding with a silver grille and special wheels; there's also a white pearl coat limited that uses frost accents.  third-row seating 670), auxiliary air conditioning 610), running boards 395), reverse sensing system 255), and power moonroof 800) are options available on all models. A trailer towing prep package 395) replaces the class ii hitch (standard) with a class iii hitch, and adds a 3. 73 limited-slip rear axle and other hardware.  front side-impact (side curtain) airbags 495) are optional, which are designed to protect front and second-row occupants. Dual front airbags are standard. Anti-lock brakes are standard. Seatbelts use retractors and pretensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. The headliner is a new safety canopy (that replaces the side curtain airbags) designed to protect occupants during a rollover in addition to protecting them from a side impact by staying inflated for a much longer period of time. Smarter airbags, ford's advancetrac electronic stability program, power-adjustable pedals, and a telescoping steering wheel will also be added near the end of 2001. Everything on it is new, but the styling is an evolutionary design. It still looks like an explorer, just fresher and more contemporary. Ford didn't want to take any risks with the explorer's design after the styling of the previous taurus was so roundly criticized. It's a handsome vehicle and it looks contemporary. New jeweled headlamps and tail lamps improve safety. Better perimeter lighting from approach lights mounted on the bottoms of the outside mirrors enhances security. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. Ford says it's a popular feature among loyal owners. A beefed up roof rack was designed to support up to 200 pounds.  while the new explorer attracted little attention, the new mountaineer caused people in parking lots to stop and point; people on the highway would look at it as they passed by, then stare in their mirrors.  the new explorer is the same overall length and the previous model, but it sits on a (two-inch) longer wheelbase and a much wider track, making it more stable and more comfortable. Light-colored trim on the inside a-pillars and grab handle add to a light, airy atmosphere. It's a successful execution, though the mouse fur roof liner is nothing to write home about. Leather on the eddie bauer model is attractive, but it seems like they could have put leather on the visible inside edge of the seat bottom. We've only glimpsed the cloth and weren't overly impressed, but it may have been a base xls model.  handsome gray wood accents, adjustable pedals, a telescoping steering wheel (cy2002), and increased seat travel make the explorer fit a wider variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning. Nicely designed cubby holes with rubber mats and a relatively large center console help keep odds and ends in check. Interior door handles seem a bit awkward, though, especially on the driver's door; i found myself fumbling around for it at night. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but they wouldn't accommodate my one-liter poland springs water bottle.  the front seats are comfortable. They are wider and offer more fore-and-aft travel than before. Seat heaters are part of the eddie bauer way of living. The buttons for them are mounted on the sides of seats, which is a bit awkward. Reaching down the side of the driver's seat, the left hand is confronted with an array of seat adjusters. Finding and pressing the seat heater button illuminates a small indicator for each seat on the climate control display. Likewise, it isn't always easy to find the height adjuster. Rake is easy to adjust and there's a knob on the uplevel seats for cranking in some lumbar support.  the decision to add a third row of seating drove much of the design and engineering of the 2002 explorer. It isn't comfortable for an adult, however. When cargo space is needed, simply squeeze a lever and lightly push the third row forward. With some practice, it's possible to unlock the rear hatch, open it, and flip the third row out of the way with one hand, which is important when juggling an armload of groceries. The third-row bench folds neatly into the foot well. Well, maybe not so neatly.  the downside here is that the cargo floor is not flat in seven-passenger explorers. Neither the second nor the third rows fold perfectly flat. So the floor slopes back toward the rear hatch. Ride quality and handling are greatly im. 2004 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's best-selling suv. introductionford explorer is the modern american station wagon. Ford sells more than 400,000 explorers a year, making it the best-selling suv and the sixth best-selling vehicle in america, and it's held these titles for a dozen years. Though quite capable as a tow vehicle and able to venture off the highway, most explorers, like most suvs, spend their entire lives shuttling people and performing the duties station wagons performed when baby boomers were growing up. The explorer answers this call admirably and comfortably, which is part of the reason it's so popular.  the explorer is roomy and comfortable. It's capable of seating seven people when equipped with the optional third-row seat that folds flat into the cargo floor when not being used. Part of the reason for this is that the explorer benefits from a superb five-speed automatic transmission.  safety features abound: anti-lock brakes come standard, and side-curtain air bags, designed to provide rollover protection, are optional and highly recommended. Ford's advancetrac electronic stability system is available for all xlt, eddie bauer, and limited models, providing improved traction and safety. The current model rides on a wider track and a longer wheelbase, giving it a more solid, more stable stance. Its newly developed independent rear suspension gives it a smoother ride and better handling than suvs with traditional live rear axles.  new car test drive chose the explorer as the best all-around sport-utility vehicle for 2003. An overhead-cam v8 800) is an option for all models except the xls. All models come standard with the five-speed automatic. Xlt comes with aluminum alloy wheels, a new chrome grille and black-grain outside door handles. Leather trimmed upholstery with a six-way power driver's seat is available for $655. Nbx includes a yakima loadwarrior roof rack, which features a cargo basket made of heavy-duty steel, two-tone bumpers, body cladding, wheel-lip moldings, step bars, front tow hooks, and 17-inch aluminum wheels with p245/65r17 all-terrain tires. The nbx interior is trimmed with unique seat fabric, special rubber floormats, and a soft liner for the cargo area with a storage bag.  eddie bauer 33,100) and limited 33,975) come with leather trimmed seating surfaces, automatic dual-zone climate control, 290-watt six-cd stereo with seven speakers, and wider tires. Six-way adjustable heated power seats with dual lumbar supports are used in front, and the driver's seat has a three-position memory feature. The top two explorer models differ in their distinctive trim: eddie bauer comes with arizona beige bumpers, moldings, lower bodyside cladding, 17-inch satin-nickel wheels and grille, and p245/65r17 all-terrain tires. Limited uses monochromatic bumpers, moldings and cladding with a chrome grille and unique 17-inch chrome wheels. The limited model is available in new ceramic white tri-coat.  options include third-row seating 670), auxiliary air conditioning 610), power-adjustable pedals 120), reverse sensing system 255), and a power moonroof 800). Located in the roof, it is designed to help protect first- and second-row outboard occupants during side-impact or rollover accidents. The safety canopy is designed to improve side-impact protection by staying inflated for a longer period. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly reco. walkaroundthe current ford explorer is the same length overall as the pre-2002 models, but it rides on a longer wheelbase (by 2 inches) and a wider track. Pushing the wheels out toward the corners makes the explorer more stable and more comfortable. Though ubiquitous, it is a handsome, good-looking vehicle. Front and rear fascia are smoothly integrated, while jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Yet, it clearly evokes the previous-generation explorer. No one will have trouble identifying it, and few will notice it at all. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but it continues to be a popular feature among loyal owners. interiorthe explorer is a comfortable vehicle, even on long trips. Handsome pecan wood accents lend a luxurious appearance. Light-colored trim on the inside a-pillars and grab handles add to the light, airy atmosphere. It's a successful execution, though the mouse-fur roof liner is nothing to write home about. The leather-trimmed upholstery is attractive. However, we wish ford would have stitched leather all the way around to the inside edge of the seat bottom instead of using carpet there to save money.  the front seats are comfortable. They are wider and offer more fore-and-aft travel than before. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm, and supportive, with lots of adjustments. The same held true for the leather seats in the eddie bauer model.  seat heaters are part of the eddie bauer way of living. The buttons that control them are mounted in an awkward location, on the sides of seats. Reaching down to the side of the driver's seat, the left hand is confronted with an array of seat adjusters; finding and pressing the seat-heater button is a challenge. Likewise, it isn't always easy to find the seat-height adjuster. Rake is easy to adjust, and there's a knob on the up-level seats for cranking in some lumbar support.  adjustable pedals, a tilt steering wheel, and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubbies with rubber mats provide space for wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keep odds and ends in check. Interior door handles seem a bit awkward at first, but that.

2005 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's most popular suv. introductionfor more than a dozen years, the ford explorer has been the best-selling suv in america. In fact, it's the sixth best-selling vehicle. It's become the standard-issue suburban family hauler. Though capable as a tow vehicle and able to venture off the highway, most explorers spend their lives shuttling people, collecting groceries and performing the duties station wagons performed when baby boomers were growing up. The explorer answers this call admirably and comfortably, and that's a big part of the reason it's so popular.  the explorer is roomy and comfortable. It can seat seven people when equipped with the optional third-row seat, which folds flat into the cargo floor when not needed. Part of the reason for this is a superb five-speed automatic transmission. Explorer's wide track and long wheelbase give it a solid, stable stance, while its independent rear suspension (an unusual feature in a mid-to-large-size suv) gives it a smoother ride and better handling than suvs with traditional live rear axles.  safety features abound. Advancetrac with roll stability control is now standard on all explorers. This sophisticated system not only senses and corrects potential skids and slides, but also monitors for potential rollovers. We recommend the optional safety canopy airbags, which are designed to provide some protection in the event of a rollover. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are also standard, and a tire pressure monitor comes on all but the base model.  the explorer is rated to pull trailers up to 7,140 pounds when properly equipped, and though it does not excel at off-road travel, it can go most of the places most of us need to go. lineupthe 2005 ford explorer is available in six trim levels: xls, xls sport, xlt, xlt sport, eddie bauer, and limited.    an overhead-cam v6 engine is standard on all models. An overhead-cam v8 800) is an option for all models except the xls. All explorers come with a five-speed automatic transmission. Xls sport 2wd 28,260) and 4wd 30,490) add the tire-pressure monitoring system, 16-inch aluminum wheels, black step bars and wheel-lip moldings, an upgraded center console and floor mats.  xlt 2wd 29,650) and 4wd 31,875) get approach lamps in the side mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a six-way power driver's seat, lumbar adjustment for both driver and passenger, an overhead console with outside-temperature indicator and compass, and warm steel accents for the center stack. Outside, a monochromatic treatment with chrome grille and fog lamps sets xlt apart. The limited 2wd 34,580) and 4wd 36,805) come with all the eddie bauer goodies, but a somewhat different look, thanks to chromed wheels and roof rails outside and higher-grade single-tone leather inside, with madarin teak accents.  all but xls can be ordered with third-row seating 745), auxiliary rear-compartment air conditioning 650), reverse-sensing system 255), power moonroof 850), and a dvd entertainment system 1,295). A trailer towing prep package 150) replaces the standard class ii hitch with a class iii/iv hitch and adds a 3. 73 (rather than 3. 55) limited-slip rear axle and seven-wire trailer harness.  second-row bucket seats with an extended floor console are available 795) on eddie bauer and limited. An off-road package 385) for xls and xlt consists of skid plates, tow hooks, off-road suspension and all-terrain tires.  the optional safety canopy air curtain system 560) is designed to help protect first- and second-row outboard occupants during side-impacts or rollovers, and is designed to improve rollover protection by staying inflated for a longer period. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly recommend this option. walkaroundwith its wheels pushed out toward the corners, the ford explorer looks stable and comfortable. Though ubiquitous, it is a handsome, good-looking vehicle. Front and rear fascia are smoothly integrated, while jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Various combinations of bright, blacked-out, color-contrasting or color-coodinated trim distinguish the xls from the xlt from the bauer from the limited. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but it continues to be a popular feature among loyal ford owners. interiorthe explorer is a comfortable vehicle, even on long trips. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm, and supportive, with lots of adjustments. The same held true for the leather seats in the eddie bauer model.  adjustable pedals, a tilt steering wheel, and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubbies with rubber mats provide space for a wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keeps odds and ends in check. The interior door handles seemed a bit awkward at first, but that went away with familiarization. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but wouldn't accommodate the one-liter size. The front power outlet was positioned well for a cell phone, but like most, was a reach for a radar detector. The trip computer came in handy, calculating the distance to an empty fuel tank. The optional six-disc in-dash cd player sounds good and is easy to operate, with large, clearly marked controls.  the second row of seats is quite comfortable. Many people prefer the second-row bucket seats available on eddie bauer and limited, which are more comfortable but only accommodate two passengers.  seatbelts use retractors and pre-tensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. The second-row center seat has an integrated shoulder belt, a feature not found on all suvs. All occupants should always wear their seat belts as they are the first line of defense in an accident.  third-row seating is available. In fact, the decision to add third-row seating drove the design and engineering of the current explorer. As a result, ford has done an excellent job of making the third row as roomy as possible, while also making it fold quickly into the floor when it isn't needed. It isn't comfortable for an adult. Head, hip, and leg room in the explorer's third row measure 38. 9, 45. 4, and 34. 9 inches, respectively, versus the envoy xl's 38. 5, 45. 9, and 31. 2. Yet the explorer rides on a relatively handy 113. 7 inch wheelbase, vs. The awkward 129 inches of the extended trailblazer and envoy. It is a tribute to the clever design of ex.

1995 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The leader of the pack gets a new personality. introductionthe ford explorer has, in a relative flash, gone from being merely a replacement for the bronco ii to becoming a bona-fide model leader. With more than 300,000 sales annually over the past two years, the explorer has taken over the lead from the chevy/gmc twins and the jeep cherokee/grand cherokee in the market’s compact sport/utility segment.  it has done so with a combination of crisp good looks, a larger cargo capacity than the competition, a long wheelbase (just under 112 in. The powertrain remains the 4. 0-liter v6, with either a standard 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic overdrive.  engine cooling has been upgraded. A new electronic automatic overdrive transmission with full electronic control of shifting and converter lockup - the a4lde - is standard on most models and includes a brake/shift interlock system.  the entire nose-end of the explorer is new, including bumper, hood, fenders and oversize wraparound front lamps, all highlighted by an aggressive, large-grid grille. The extremely popular 4-door version has a chrome grille and bumper treatment, and the more off-road oriented, 2-door version uses body color on the grille and black on the bumper. Fender flares on both are much more prominent than on the ’94.  new safety features are in abundance for 1995, including 4-wheel disc brakes with standard anti-lock brakes (abs), a standard dual airbag system, non-motorized adjustable-height shoulder belts, rear-seat head restraints, and a center high-mounted stoplight.  the ’95 explorer comes in several versions: 2-door xl, sport and expedition, and 4-door xl, xlt, eddie bauer and limited. All models are available in 2-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive.  the sporty 2-door expedition model replaces the 2-door eddie bauer. Its special equipment package consists of 16-in. Chromed steel wheels and p255 tires as standard equipment, along with wheel-lip moldings, integrated fog lamps and standard step bars.  for 1995, a short-and-long-arm (sla) fully independent front suspension takes the place of the twin i-beam. In automatic 4wd, additional torque is transferred to the front wheels as required by driving conditions.  the explorer has 15-in. Wheels and tires as standard equipment, with a larger, 16-in. P255 tire standard for the eddie bauer and expedition models.  all explorer hoods have been fitted with pneumatic hood-lift assist struts in place of prop rods. The windshield wipers have been upgraded for improved wipe quality and reduced noise, and there’s an optional interval rear-wiper system for the tailgate glass. A battery-saver feature has also been added to shut down headlamps after 10 minutes if they have inadvertently been left on.  an automatic ride control system is standard on explorer limited 4x4 models. A 4-wheel, variable-damping air-shock system developed by ford truck and ford electronics, in cooperation with the monroe shock-absorber folks, constantly senses suspension movement, steering, braking and acceleration motions. They’re a great deal easier to use than the previous small-chassis radio controls.  the explorer’s floor pan mounts a revised slide bar for the seat tracks. And there is an additional 12-volt power point for electronic accessories.  an optional console between the front bucket seats contains cupholders, a message center, a small storage compartment, a tissue dispenser, and ashtray, a set of rear radio controls, a designated space for the optional 6-cd changer, and space for an optional ford electronics flip-out, voice-actuated cellular phone.  one version of the optional center console even has a hot-and-cold air blower with upper and lower registers. The front suspension has eliminated a lot of the old explorer’s annoying ride habits, especially the pitching and rocking we used to experience at freeway speeds. It’s quiet and relatively plush (for a truck) with a bit of body roll in sharp turns.  the 4. 0-liter v6 is certainly no substitute for the jeep grand cherokee’s optional v8 or gm’s 200-hp v6. Still, ford’s engine copes with the heavyweight explorer’s bulk without straining, though it is still a bit grindy and noisy. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly, quietly and positively.  the rack-and-pinion steering is a good deal more precise than the old system, and it doesn’t require a lot of correction in freeway driving. Ford has given the customer all of that and more with the 1995 version, thanks to its fresh appearance, standard abs and dual airbags, sla front suspension, and rack-and-pinion steering.  the 1995 explorer’s price will most likely reflect all of this added standard equipment, plus adjustments for inflation and labor/materials costs, and a healthy dollop for profits.  it’ll be interesting to see how the competition - the completely new sport/utilities from gm and the v8 option from jeep - will challenge this new explorer. The 1995 version is yet another winner from the truck mavens at ford. assembled inlouisville, kentucky. 1999 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's best-selling sport-utility goes for another crown. introductionthere seems to be an unending stream of sport-utilities hitting showrooms, but none have come close to the popularity of the ford explorer.  its roominess, solid reputation for durability, quality engineering, good looks and overall reputation are all factors in its huge popularity. walkaroundbefore the ford explorer existed there was the jeep cherokee with its straight lines and sharp edges. The explorer introduced softer lines and rounded edges and set the prevailing suv style in the process. That look continues.  the distinctive, large grille is flanked by wraparound headlights. There's a slot for air in the bumper, and an air scoop below. The look suggests refined ruggedness, as well as strong family ties with the ford truck family-and that's precisely what the designers intended. There is a new front bumper and round fog lamps, new body side moldings, roof rack and lift gate trim. But the familiar explorer is still there.  the hood slants steeply, which gives the explorer an aggressive look. At the rear-a vestige of its truck heritage-are variable rate leaf springs. Turn the new t-handle toward 'gate' and the top-hinged door rises easily and parks up and well out of the way. Turn the handle toward 'window' and the glass can be raised by itself. Another feature we like is a convenient interior power lock/unlock button on top of the left rear wheel-well for operating the door locks when standing at the back of the vehicle.  a new optional reverse sensing system makes parallel parking much easier. The system uses sonar to warn the driver when anything is less than six feet behind the vehicle. The driver is alerted by a beeping sound that increases in frequency as the vehicle approaches the obstacle; the tone becomes continuous when the rear bumper is less than 10 inches from the object. We found the system to be extremely helpful in accurately judging distances when backing up. It's useful for positioning the explorer for loading and unloading. But entry height is not a serious problem. Shorter folks may find optional running boards helpful.  the overall design of the interior is quite good, featuring the flowing shapes and soft-edged buttons and controls now favored by ford. The various controls are king-size, making them easy to operate when the vehicle is moving, and we give the overall appearance of the instrument panel top marks. Floor consoles have been redesigned. Higher trim levels boast rear cupholders and a storage bin. The optional moon roof has a one-touch-open feature.  seating is a big plus. The front buckets are covered in high-quality cloth with an attractive, subdued pattern. The seats are among the most supportive in this class, with aggressive thigh and side bolsters.  the explorer's other strong suit is its best-in-class roominess, perhaps the key element in its popularity.  safety is improved this year with new optional side air bags. Housed in the outer side bolster of the front seats, they deploy within 30 milliseconds of impact.  a new homelink system can operate up to three remote controls to open garage doors and turn on house lights, which improves safety and convenience. And travelnote provides the driver with an electronic message recorder and play-back system.  three engines are available: a 4. 0-liter overhead-valve v6 rated at 160 horsepower, a 4. 0-liter single overhead-cam v6 with 210 horsepower, and a 5. 0-liter v8 that makes 215 horsepower.  deciding to buy an explorer is not too difficult. Deciding which explorer with which engine and which transmission may take an afternoon of brochure browsing. In between are the sport, xls, xlt and eddie bauer. This is the best engine for most folks. It provides plenty of power for passing and tackling long grades, yet it's inexpensive and delivers good fuel economy. It also comes with the five-speed automatic transmission, which does a gret  the v8 is the best choice for anyone who tows a trailer. It's easy to get in and out. Visibility all around is quite good in spite of the roof's large b- and c- pillars. The driver enjoys that secure, command-of-the-road seating position that's helped make sport-utilities so popular.  the explorer doesn't really drive like a truck. Though more springy than a sedan, the ride is comfortable. Some of that springiness has to do with its rear leaf springs, some of it has to do with the big tires. The suspension does do a good job absorbing road irregularities, though, and that's how it differs from other trucks. There's no excessive body lean in turns. The steering is exceptionally quick and precise. It doesn't wander in a straight line. It's easy to manage on narrow roads. It simply does not drive large.  overall, the explorer feels like a solid, well-built vehicle, though there is a bit of wind noise in the 40-60 mph range.  we're pleased with the acceleration performance provided by the revised 210-horsepower v6. It launches with enthusiasm and maintains that enthusiasm to a degree that would calm any concerns about safe merging with traffic. Like most sport-utility vehicles, the engine becomes noticeably audible under hard acceleration, but it's smooth and quiet under normal operation. Overall, the single overhead-cam v6 engine is a sweetheart. Unless extra torque is needed for towing a car or a big boat, we don't think it's necessary to spend the extra money for the v8.  although the explorer has racked up virtually all of its huge sales numbers with the standard 160-horsepower overhead-valve engine, the 210-horsepower overhead-cam engine is a much better powerplant. The auto mode is used for most driving, which continually monitors and adjusts power to the front wheels to minimize wheel slip. The 4x4 high mode electronically locks the transfer case in high gear, providing a 50/50 torque split between the front and rear wheels; this mode is primarily for driving off road or in extreme winter conditions. The 4x4 low mode switches the transfer case to the lower gear ranges for serious off-roading.  though superior to a car in terms of off-road capability, the explorer is not the leader in backwoods prowess. The anti-lock brakes improve control on slippery surfaces, allowing the driver to brake and steer at the same time. summarythe explorer operates in a populous realm, against some very able competition. It's not the least expensive sport-utility. But for the kind of all-around use most families get from their suvs, the explorer's formula is still tough to beat. assembled inst.
