Gm's accord and camry fighter is up to the task. introductionthe chevrolet malibu is a superb midsize sedan. It strikes a nice balance between well-controlled handling and a smooth ride. Overall, the new malibu feels smooth and is pleasant to drive. the cabin is nicely designed, attractive, and everything is easy to operate, though there are some hard plastics that detract from an otherwise first-rate interior. The seats are comfortable, with plenty of front seat room and a generous rear seat. in short, we think the chevy malibu stands up well when held against the toyota camry and honda accord gold standards. Choosing among them largely comes down to nitpicking, splitting hairs and personal preference. Camry and accord may have an edge on resale value, but they're also likely to come with higher price tags. In any case, we don't see the gap between this chevrolet and the imports that we used to see. the 2009 malibu gets some new equipment. Stabilitrak electronic stability control is standard on all 2009 models. The base model also comes with electric power steering, to save drag on the engine, while the v6-powered models come with hydraulic power steering. The malibu makes good use of its space. Despite the longer wheelbase, the car is only three inches longer than the 2007 model, giving it an attractive wheels-at-the-corners look. the malibu looks masculine, brawny, yet clean and crisp. The bodysides are completely clean and uncluttered, and the twin round taillamps pay homage to the corvette. The dual-port grille is a contemporary chevrolet design cue. We think it works better on the silverado, but it gives the malibu a distinctive look, and distinction is the goal of the midsize sedan designer. Everything within arm's reach and easy to operate. This design is brought into the 21st century with wood and metallic trim and a very pleasing blue-on-white instrumentation graphic treatment that's flooded with blue light at night. less noticeable are thoughtful features such as ambient lighting. A feature associated with expensive luxury cars recently popularized by mercedes and bmw, ambient lighting helps the driver and front passenger find secondary controls and items around the center console. A cubby on top of the dash is convenient for wallets and such, a useful feature subaru has used for years. cloth, faux-suede and leather interior options are available. The standard interiors are monotone, but several two-tone interior combinations are available, including a dramatic black-and-saddle leather combination that's very attractive. we found the leather seats in the ltz quite comfortable. Piping in a contrasting tone dresses them up. The front bucket seats are somewhere between sumptuous and luscious in the way they look and the way they sit, very comfortable and supportive. the stretch in wheelbase affords each occupant plenty of room, and there is ample headroom and legroom in the rear compartment for six-foot-plus passengers. The backs of the front seats are dished out to add knee room. The rear seatbacks flip down to provide a pass-through to the trunk. While that trunk has 15. 1 cubic feet of cargo volume, the rear pillars are pushed to the far back of the car, creating a small trunk opening that won't accept large boxes. the cabin includes a dashtop storage bin, door cubbies, and seatback pockets, plus standard ambient lighting for the overhead console and door-pull pockets. We've never cared for the look of rolled-up sliding covers on center consoles due to their ability to attract crumbs. overall, the malibu interior is attractive and comfortable. The quality of the interior materials is good. We think the malibu's interior compares well to the cabin of the honda accord. In fact, it may be more attractive, though the quality of the material on the steering wheel hub and the hard plastic on the lower dash aren't as nice. However, the chevrolet has an attractive leather shift boot when the leather upholstery is chosen, and the accord can't make that claim. every malibu comes with xm satellite radio and the latest version of onstar with turn-by-turn navigation. However, there's no gps navigation system, nor is there a back-up camera. Chevrolet says people prefer to use their portable gps units and relatively few want to pay for an oem navigation system, but we're a little skeptical of that claim. big knobs and buttons and an elegant design make operating the audio and climate functions easy. In fact, we found it easier and less confusing to make adjustments in the malibu than in a comparably equipped (non-navi) honda accord; the honda seems less intuitive and convenient. Unlike the honda, the chevrolet has the audio controls at the top, better because people tend to fiddle with their stereos more than their temperature controls. the climate controls in the malibu are very easy to operate utilizing big knobs for fan and vent modes and simple, clearly labeled buttons. Honda splits the climate controls up, forcing the driver to examine them more closely before pressing a button. Window switches are conveniently mounted on the doors. New structure, new styling, new interior. introductionthe impala has been changing, morphing, and maturing with the vagaries of the market since 1958 when the first one showed up as a coupe and convertible. now, the chevrolet impala has been substantially upgraded for 2006. The 2006 impala features new and very attractive exterior styling, a new interior, and a choice of three new engines. the new impala is a comfortable and convenient car, roomy, easy to get in, with big grab-style door handles. It's a practical sedan with innovative flip-and-fold back seats and folding rear seatbacks. And it comes well-equipped with safety features, including side-curtain airbags. The impala lt best exemplifies the model line, especially when ordered with the larger, 3. 9-liter engine, which delivers responsive performance. The ltz upgrades with leather, a very nice xm satellite radio setup and other convenience features. an inexpensive pricing structure with loads of rebates on it puts the new impala on the shopping list for family sedans. Impala competes with the ford five hundred, chrysler 300, dodge charger, honda accord, toyota camry, and nissan altima. the ss stuffs a small-block v8 into this package. It comes with the bare essentials, such as air conditioning, power windows and locks, am/fm/cd, cruise control, cloth upholstery, a bench seat, and 16-inch steel wheels. Anti-lock brakes are optional 600). the lt is available with the 3. 5-liter v6 21,860) or a new 3. 9-liter v6 24,760), which includes 17-inch alloy wheels. The ss comes with 18-inch wheels and tires and a performance suspension. safety features that come standard include dual front smart air bags, and side-curtain roof-mounted air bags. Underneath, it gets a stiff new body and chassis structure, retuned suspensions with a 10-mm wider track, and new 16-, 17- and 18-inch wheels and tires. the ls, lt and ltz share one front end design, while the ss has a completely different nose architecture. interiorthe new impala has a lot going for it inside as well, with a completely new, cleaned-up interior, reshaped and reupholstered seats, and flip/fold rear seats. we felt pretty comfortable overall inside the impala. The seats have firmer cushions and increased lumbar support than previous models. We didn't find the ss seats particularly comfortable or supportive, with too much lumbar support and not enough side bolstering to retain the upper body in corners. Optional leather-covered seating has a new style of seams around the perimeter and french seams on the center sections. the impala also has a new twin-brow instrument panel design that wraps around into the door panels. Ls, lt and ltz models have a wood trim, with brushed silver trim optional. The impala ss comes standard with metallic trim panels, with wood trim as an option. We found the panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. We found the interior materials at least one grade better than the usual chevrolet stuff. the optional dual-zone climate control system can have up to a 12-degree temperature difference side-to-side. It's a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The dashboard has an expanded driver information center, now with more than 50 different alerts, depending on the vehicle's equipment. The base audio system includes am/fm/cd and six speakers. An optional mp3/cd-radio is configured for xm satellite radio, with a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between am, fm and xm. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. The optional icdx radio adds an in-dash six-cd changer. All radios include a standard auxiliary input jack for external devices such as an ipod or remote cassette player. the rear seat is roomy and comfortable for two adults or three kids, but not three adults. The rear seat cushions flip forward to create a covered storage area under the seat (with cushions down) and grocery bag hooks when the cushions are flipped. The seatback also folds down flat to create a large pass-through port to the trunk. trunk space, at 18. 5 cubic feet, is more than competitive in the segment, and it has a huge opening for easy loading. driving impressionthe new chevrolet impala comes with a new generation of v6 engines. We found them to be smooth and quiet if not bristling with power. Variable valve timing is a first for the impala's cam-in-block v6 engines. The system changes the orientation of the camshaft, automatically adjusting the timing of the intake and exhaust valves for better performance, economy, and emissions. Thus, a system that started out on very expensive imported cars has now reached down to the lowly chevy v6 engines and made them better. the 3. 5-liter v6 that comes on lt and ls models generates 211 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque. The 3. 9-liter v6 that comes on ls and ltz models produces 242 horsepower and 242 pound-feet of torque. We're expecting both engines to earn fuel economy ratings of about 19/29 mpg city/highway. with 303 horsepower, the impala ss has more power and torque than any other entry in the class, but the chassis that comes with the v8 needs taming. While we appreciated the extra power and torque available in a kickdown or passing situation, and we loved the brawny, muscular sound of this engine at full throttle, it's a challenge to launch cleanly and quickly at the same time. Besides wheelspin, there's a lot of torque steering. This system helps provide up to 8 percent better fuel economy in light-load driving conditions. However, there is a lot of pitch, dive, and body roll in this chassis, and a lot of uncertain driving moments with the added power of the ss. Steering is over-assisted, fairly numb and uncommunicative. the impala's front suspension is a macpherson strut coil-over-spring independent design, with gas-charged struts and a stabilizer bar with new, taller jounce bumpers. The rear suspension uses a trailing arm, tri-link setup with gas-charged struts and coil springs. A rear stabilizer bar is standard on all models. The new abs includes electronic brake-force distribution. summarythe new chevrolet impala represents an improvement over previous models. The 3. 5 and 3. 9 v6 lt and ltz versions are pleasing to drive overall. While the ss cuts a conservative but dashing figure with its quiet badging and giant five-spoke, 18-inch wheels, it's got more power than it k. Bluetooth is available, the impala ss gets 18-inch flangeless alloy wheels and there are three new exterior colors. we find the impala's neat, clean lines pleasing to the eye. Its styling looks contemporary, handsome, and clean. Other people must think so as well, as the impala is among the top-10 best-selling cars in the u. S. this is a roomy car, in the front as well as the back seats, and getting in and out is easy. The impala has a big trunk with a big lid that makes loading cargo easy, and it has a healthy cargo capacity. Optional flip-and-fold rear seats are exclusive in its class, and provide not only holding wells for groceries but a flat cargo floor that expands the trunk for long items. on the road, the impala is very stable, a nice cruiser. There's lots of low-end torque from the larger of the two available v6 engines, a 3. 9-liter v6 with advanced technologies. Step on the gas and it goes. Given its size, the impala handles well, and surprisingly so. several trim levels are available, ranging from a strong, reliable, fuel-efficient family sedan to a sleek and powerful performance car. Depending upon trim level, there are three engine choices, two v6s and a v8. chevrolet continues to improve and upgrade the impala. We highly recommend the stabilitrak electronic stability control. Onstar is standard, and in its latest version it will automatically communicate the nature and severity of a crash as well as its location to the 911 centers. overall, the chevrolet impala is a comfortable and convenient car, practical and enjoyable to drive. A tire-pressure monitor is standard. walkaroundthe 2009 chevrolet impala presents a clean, neat, pleasing design that's not so homogenized as to be boring. It's an attractive car. the big headlamps have a premium, jeweled appearance with three independent lighting units and are smoothly integrated into the front end. The tail lights are nicely integrated as well. Flat-blade windshield wipers provide consistent pressure on the glass, which helps eliminate streaking and wind noise. the ls, lt and ltz are distinguished by exterior trim but share one front end design, while the ss sports a unique grille with ss-signature black-diamond crosshatch pattern. The impala ss also features corvette-inspired bright exhaust tips. A rear spoiler is standard on ltz and ss models, and is available on lt. interiorthe 2009 impala has a lot going for it inside as well. The standard seats have fairly firm cushions and decent lumbar support compared to previous models. We didn't find the ss seats particularly comfortable or supportive; lumbar support is too aggressive, while there's not enough side bolstering to retain the upper body in corners. a twin-brow instrument panel wraps around into the doors. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. Too many radios nowadays are too complex or have tiny buttons difficult to operate underway. Not so with gm's radios. The impala sound system is sophisticated yet easy to operate. The optional system adds an in-dash six-cd changer. The premium audio system is bose. Turn-by-turn navigation directs the driver through the route by using the digital readout lines in the radio head. Directions are downloaded by the onstar advisor to the vehicle and can be played back or paused anywhere from start to destination.
