2001 hyundai elantra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. More features for the dollar. introductionhyundai's elantra has been redesigned for 2001. They've made it larger and roomier. Keeping loyal customers continues to be tied to a surprisingly complete warranty. The hyundai advantage extends bumper-to-bumper coverage to five years or 60,000 miles, while the powertrain is warranted for 10 years or 100,000 miles.  hyundai's warranty wouldn't mean much unless the elantra were reliable and owners could count on this compact. In fact, if the vehicle were difficult to live with then all the guarantees in the world would not mean much. Fortunately, the elantra is much improved and continues to improve in fit-and-finish while providing decent performance. The elantra continues to make great strides in changing perceptions of small korean cars.  the previous edition elantra proved that hyundai was making an unqualified mark on the economy car market. The sedan retails at $12,499 with the 5-speed manual, and $13,299 with an automatic. (the wagon has been dropped from the lineup for 2001.)  elantra gls includes such popular features as air conditioning, power windows, mirrors and door locks, thick cut-pile carpeting, a tachometer and six-way adjustable driver's seat. Other options available include a moonroof, alloy wheels and stereo upgrade, which can bring the price to $14,134 with the $435 destination charge. Adding the optional abs, brought the price to $15,284. walkaroundelantra widens its distinction from other small sedans with its new styling. It's a pleasant appearance, with rounded fenders, a sloping hood, a new grille and trapezoidal headlight assemblies. The changes add more than good looks. This redesign has lowered the elantra's coefficient of drag to 0. 333. The large greenhouse affords good outward visibility in all directions. The restyled trapezoidal headlamps improve the pattern of light that spreads across a wider field of vision of road ahead.  the elantra's doors open wide for easy access to both front and rear seats, and its trunk provides 11 cubic feet of cargo space--above average in this class. Unfortunately, the trunk opening is rather small, making it difficult to load larger items that should easily fit. interiorexpanding the elantra platform has provided more interior room translating to a more comfortable passenger compartment. Stretching the wheel base by 2. 3 inches results in increased rear legroom as well as increased headroom and hip room for both front and rear passengers. Hyundai continues expanding a higher level of quality in elantra's passenger cabin. This improvement isn't measured by bells and whistles, but by a clean, efficient design, that invokes a more pleasant interior. The instrument panel is more contemporary, presenting gauges in an easy to read manner.  the cloth-upholstered seats are larger than the previous version making way for more comfortable seating. The driver's seat has six-way adjustments and height adjustment. Front headrests and seatbelt anchors are also adjustable. Side airbags are now standard equipment in the elantra making a much safer sedan, especially welcomed in a car of elantra's price.  remote trunk and fuel release and a carpeted cargo compartment are standard.  heating, ventilation and air conditioning are now controlled with rotary switches, rather than the sliding type. They're much easier to locate and adjust while driving. The buttons are so small that adjusting them distracts from the task of driving.  no one is going to mistake the elantra or any compact vehicle for a luxury car, but offering a lush cabin isn't what this car does best. This hyundai was designed and built to provide the most economical transportation it can, while providing as much comfort as possible. We noticed that the engine can be particularly inharmonious when run at high revs for an extended stretch. We even climbed some pretty treacherous mountain roads, and everywhere we took the car, except the steepest grades, the elantra preformed well. Even on mountain passes it had no trouble keeping with the flow of traffic. We often recommend selecting a manual transmission when performance is a priority; and this is especially true on economy cars. Plenty of cars that cost $10,000 more than elantra, don't have multi-link rear suspension, or speed-sensitive power steering. The steering assist gives the wheel a light touch at low speed, for easy parallel parking, yet it's not overly sensitive at highway speed. Feedback through the steering wheel gives the driver a pretty good idea of how well the front tires are gripping.  elantra's ride quality is reasonably compliant, yet controlled, and it handles twisting mountain roads in fine fashion. Only on the most uneven stretches of freeway, where joints and undulations can get the suspension hopping does the elantra get bouncy.  hyundai's continued effort to moderate shakes and limit cabin noise have made the newest elantra a much tighter package. Noise and vibration exist inside the elantra's cabin, but below that of other subcompacts. The engine can get loud when run wide-open. Yet overall, the elantra is smoother and quieter than previous-generation models. summarythis third-generation hyundai elantra proves to be a more formidable competitor for the dodge neon, honda civic and other small cars. Adding the most popular features without increases to the sticker warrants that the elantra be added to the 'must consider' list for anyone who is in the hunt for a small car at a reasonable price.  this isn't the most refined car in its class, but it's a long way from the least refined. The honda cr-v and toyota rav4 have tail doors hinged on the right, which works well in japan but in the u. The open door gets in the way when unloading curbside. By hinging the hatch at the top, hyundai provides a universal solution. Opening the rear hatch is a cinch with its pistol-grip latch handle and gas struts. Closing it is just as easy with a pull-down grip mounted inside. When open, the liftgate easily clears six-foot foreheads. interiorgetting in and out of the santa fe is easy, thanks to its big, comfortable door handles and low step-in height. Rear-seat passengers don't need to turn their feet sideways to clear the doorjamb.  once in, the interior is friendly to the touch. All controls are big and thick. The shifter knob is big. The stereo controls are large, offering easy adjustment. The climate controls are big and easy to operate, though they look and feel like plastic. Bright trim dresses up the inside door releases and parking-brake handle.  the shift knob and shift quadrant are brightened by chrome trim in the gls and lx. Illuminated power window switches and a lighted glove box add convenience at night. The driver's cup holder is conveniently located, making this a good vehicle for that morning cappuccino. The digital clock is located in the middle of the dashboard where it's easy to see. Big outside mirrors provide an excellent view rearward.  the front seats are comfortable, though flat, without much side-bolster support. Rear-seat cup holders are molded into the door-mounted map pockets. The rear seatback reclines, and the reclining mechanism was recently improved. But the windows in the rear doors don't roll all the way down, a shortcoming shared with other small suvs.  isofix child-seat anchors are provided at both outboard rear seating positions. Head restraints and three-point seatbelts are provided for outboard passengers, while the center-rear passenger must make do with a lap belt only. The outboard shoulder-belt anchor loops are fixed, not adjustable (though we sometimes wonder whether anyone actually adjusts the adjustable kind). The restraining loops for rear seat-belt buckles don't appear to be very durable (but that isn't a safety item). Also, we noticed the latches for the flipping the rear seats forward were made of plastic rather than metal.  to fold the rear seats, flip the rear seat bottom forward, remove the headrests from the seat backs, then fold the seat backs down. This provides as much or more cargo space than any other compact suv. The cargo floor isn't perfectly flat. Sub-floor storage bins provide a place to hide valuables or road gear. driving impressionthe hyundai santa fe handles well good handling, particularly the two-wheel-drive version. It doesn't feel top-heavy like some suvs. The brakes are refreshingly responsive, even before the optional abs steps in.  the new 3. 5-liter v6 comes paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. It's a little lethargic off the line and the throttle response isn't linear, but the owner should be able to calibrate his or her foot to it. The 3. 5-liter engine develops 200 horsepower and 219 pounds-feet of torque. Epa-rated fuel economy drops to 16/22 city/highway mpg. With its cast-iron block and multi-valve aluminum cylinder heads, this is the same engine hyundai installs in its flagship xg350 sedan.  the 2. 7-liter v6 produces 173 horsepower and 182 pound-feet of torque. Those are good numbers when compared to the v6s offered in other compact suvs. Indeed, only the ford escape and mazda tribute, which share an optional 200-horsepower 3. 0-liter v6, offer more power in this class. Slamming down the throttle at highway speed brings on a smooth and prompt downshift, but acceleration that's less than fulfilling. The system appears to do a good job of sending the torque where it's needed, even without the optional traction control. The system combines proven engineering in innovative ways. A v-beam rear suspension, instead of the torsion beam found on the sedan, gives the coupe and gt a firmer, more planted feel, and helps to reduce body roll around corners. Suspensions are tuned differently between models with standard 16-inch and optional 17-inch wheels, with the larger wheels receiving an even sportier treatment. Although the base 2013 elantra gls model starts at more than $1,000 over the 2012 model, it gets more standard features including air conditioning, a telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, and 16-inch (instead of 15-inch) wheels. On gls models equipped with the automatic transmission, heated front seats are included with the optional preferred package.  we found all elantra variants enjoyable to drive. The sedan's smooth ride and responsive handling make for a plush, but not numb, driving experience. The coupe and gt models feel more connected to the road, without sacrificing road-trip comfort.  inside, the elantra sedan is roomy all around, especially by compact standards, with interior measurements comparable to those of a small midsize car. The coupe and gt, however, suffer from a lack of rear headroom due to the steeper rake of their rooflines. Like most compacts, elantra is front-wheel drive. Using lighter materials such as aluminum and plastic on engine parts helps to keep the elantra family relatively lightweight, around 2,700 pound for the coupe and a bit more for the gt. The sedan weighs in at around 2,900 pounds, which is good for a compact sedan. These lower curb weights help elantra achieve solid performance and excellent fuel economy.  epa ratings for all elantra variants are some of the most competitive in the industry.
