1997 toyota camry review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Polishing the gold standard. introductionamong ordinary cars, sales leap after a redesign and then gradually decline as the new becomes familiar and other, more exciting models catch the public's eye.  not so the camry. Last year--the final year for a five-year-old design--toyota sold more camrys than ever before. Thanks to its status as the benchmark among family sedans, the camry manages to sustain ever-increasing sales, even with a comparatively steep pricetag.  the camry's virtues have included bulletproof reliability, excellent fit and finish, and a comfortable, quiet interior. Its performance has never stirred the soul, but it has been predictable and precise. In redesigning the car, toyota had no interest in tinkering with the formula. Its goal was to enhance the car's features without changing its fundamental nature.  in this, the company has succeeded. The low-volume coupe and wagon models have been dropped. The trim levels have also been tweaked. The base model is now called the ce instead of the dx; the mid-level le, which makes up 60% of sales, and top-of-the-line xle remain the same.  the new camry is less than an inch longer than before, but it looks bigger and more substantial, thanks to smart design. The car's lines are more angular, and angularity generally lends a larger appearance. Toyota also stretched the wheelbase two inches and chopped the front and rear overhang. This puts the wheels closer to the corners, which gives the car a sportier stance and a fuller look overall.  the car's aerodynamics have been improved significantly (from a coefficient of drag of 0. 33 to 0. 30), thanks to a sharply swept-back windshield and a squared-off tail with wraparound lights. The aerodynamic new tail design does double-duty by also changing the trunk opening, which is an inch and a half wider and has a lower liftover, making loading easier. The simple gooseneck trunk hinges are unchanged, however, and still intrude into the cargo area.  the interior of the trunk is slightly wider (it can hold golf clubs crosswise) and fully lined for a nicer appearance and less noise. The rear seats can be folded forward (in a 60/40 split) to increase cargo capacity even further.  to jazz things up even more, toyota has added five new exterior colors, some of them positively exotic, such as sunfire red metallic, blue velvet pearl, and frosted iris metallic. interiorthe interior of the new camry was designed at the toyota technical center in the u. And it displays a welcome americanization. Plus the seat and seatback can be adjusted to more positions, fitting a wider range of people.  the camry le we tested had a clean, simple dashboard with a low cowl for good visibility. The white-on-black gauges of the instrument panel are larger and brighter this year. A low washer fluid light and odometer with dual trip-meter have been added. The most helpful change has been to invert the audio and temperature controls, with the more frequently used audio controls on top.  several thoughtful amenities have been added. A second power outlet is located at the bottom on the front console, next to the new built-in tissue dispenser. The sun visors have extension panels. The front cupholders now hold 20-ounce bottles, and new rear cupholders can take either juice boxes or cans. There are numerous new storage cubbies, and the glovebox is almost 30% larger.  interior dimensions are slightly larger, particularly in rear legroom, thanks to the longer wheelbase. The amount of sound-deadening material has been increased, making an already-quiet interior luxuriously quiet. Body structure has been strengthened thoughout, as have been the rear seatbacks to resist intrusion from objects in the trunk. The lap belt in the rear center seat has been replaced with a safer, three-point belt. The 2. 2's acceleration is acceptable, and once up to speed, it rolls along nicely. It has to downshift more frequently, and passing on two-lane roads requires more planning than with a larger engine. It passes with ease, and accelerates briskly away from stoplights. Horsepower is improved here, too, from 188 to 194. However, the uprated v6 now requires premium fuel for optimum performance.  an intriguing new combo this year is a ce fitted with a v6 and a manual transmission, to satisfy sporty tastes (base price $19,668). It's the fastest of them all with a 0-to-60 time of 7. 6 seconds. Steering is more precise this year, giving greater maneuverability. Though the car is no sports sedan, it is smooth and competent, giving the driver a confident sense of control. summarythe camry redesign had a secondary goal of wringing cost out wherever possible. Many changes are even improvements. The new bumpers, for example, are cheaper to build and install yet protect up to 5 mph instead of 2. 5 mph, as before.  however, it's not easy to see the savings on the camry's window sticker. The company says new camrys are 3% to 4% cheaper than comparably equipped 1996 models. That may be technically true, but it is largely because antilock brakes are now mostly standard instead of mostly optional at a relatively high $1100.  nevertheless, the new camry is just what toyota set out to achieve: more of everything but still a camry. It is more refined, better handling, roomier and better equipped. Anti-lock Brakes✔ Power Windows✔ Air Conditioning

2010 toyota camry review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Best-selling car in america. introductionthe toyota camry is the most popular midsize car sold in america. It does everything very well and is known for its quality, reliability and resale value. It's comfortable, easy to operate and an easy car to live with in a hectic world. It's pleasant to drive in all circumstances.  camry seats five in comfort yet it's relatively compact and easy to park. It's smooth and quiet, but it can accelerate with vigor. Its cabin is attractive, functional and refined, while its styling is aerodynamic and shows vitality.  models range from the well-equipped base camry to the near-luxury camry xle. In between are the popular le, a modest step up from the base and available with the v6, and the se, decked out with suspension, tires and trim to please the sporty crowd. Equipped with variable valve timing with intelligence (vvt-i), the new engine is rated at 169 horsepower for the camry, le and xle trim levels and 179 hp for the sporty se. Those are substantial increases over last year's 158 horsepower. The base and le trim levels have restyled steel wheel covers; the xle has new 10-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels, while the se gets new 17-inch alloys. The camry hybrid has a unique grille, a distinct front bumper, a wider lower intake opening, restyled fog lamps and 16-inch alloy wheels.  2010 camry models come standard with vehicle stability control with traction control. The toyota camry remains the benchmark by which its competitors are judged. lineupthe 2010 toyota camry comes in base, le, sporty se, luxury-equipped xle, and the camry hybrid. The base camry 19,395) comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning and pollen filter, cruise control, power windows and mirrors, manual tilt-and-telescope steering wheel, a multi-function information display with outside temperature, a 160-watt stereo with six speakers, single cd player and auxiliary jack for mp3 devices, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat and 16-inch steel wheels. The camry le 20,850) and le v6 24,565) add an eight-way power driver's seat and remote keyless entry.  the camry se 22,165) and se v6 25,840) add a firmer, lowered suspension, flashy styling cues, unique interior trim, fog lights and p215/55r17 tires on 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels.  the camry xle 25,925) features glossy wood-grain interior trim and comes standard with the automatic. Xle models add dual-zone auto climate control with an electronic ion filter, a jbl audio upgrade with 440 watts, six-cd changer, bluetooth wireless telephone interface, power passenger seat, power sunroof, split 40/20/40 reclining rear seat, rear reading lamps, manual rear-window sunshade, and 16-inch alloy wheels. The motor augments the gas engine's performance and captures energy that would otherwise be wasted as the car slows and brakes, so it can reduce fuel consumption substantially. Stand-alone options include power tilt/slide sunroof 940), leather package for se v6 1,210) and hybrid 1,295), heated front seats 440), auto-dimming rearview mirror 150), heated outside mirrors 30), and 16-inch alloy wheels 410). Not all options are available for all trim levels.  safety features on all camrys include a full complement of airbags: dual-stage front airbags, a driver's-knee airbag, upper body-protecting side-impact airbags for front passengers, and head-protecting side air curtains for the front and rear seats. All models come with anti-lock brakes (abs), which aid steering control during a panic stop. The abs features brake assist, which applies the brakes more forcefully and consistently when it senses the onset of a panic stop, and electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), which balances brake application front and rear for optimal stopping distance. A tire-pressure monitor is standard, and vehicle stability control with traction control is standard on all camrys except the hybrid. walkaroundthe camry's front end is the boldest design element, with sharp points, curving cut lines and entertaining surface planes. The hood dips broadly through the middle, pushing visual heft out over the front fenders. There's a toyota emblem above horizontal slats. The single-piece fascia blends all the diverse elements into a smooth aerodynamic look that's several steps away from looking like just another midsize sedan.  for 2010 the front end has a new grille and front bumper, larger lower intake opening and larger projector headlamps, which blend in well with the existing design and make it, perhaps, bolder and more distinctive.  the side view is less fashionable and somewhat bulky looking, with a high beltline, symmetrical windows and square doors, graced with a barely discernible character line running through flush-mounted door handles. The wheel openings are circular, which on a car with a lower profile might suggest sporty intentions. On the camry, they draw attention to the expanse of sheet metal between them, and instead whisper sedate.  the rear end, which looks somewhat like a miniaturized copy of the squared-off trunk lid of the bmw 7 series, finishes the side profile. That bustle-like hump gives the trailing edge of the trunk a slight aero-lip that suggests it's there to reduce rear lift at high speeds. An oversize toyota emblem perches atop the license plate recess. The taillamps repeat the theme of the headlamps and are nicely detailed. The bumper wraps around the back end, capping the corners beneath the taillights and sweeping into a soft, horizontal indentation that, on the v6-equipped models, finishes in cutouts for the chrome-tipped dual exhausts.  the camry se is the easiest model to distinguish, and perhaps the boldest of all. The inference of aero treatment on the trunk lid is boosted on the se with a true spoiler. A full body kit flares the lower edge of the car outward, emphasizing the sport model's lower ride height. Six-spoke, 17-inch aluminum wheels fill those circular wheel wells nicely.  there's aerodynamic massaging not obvious to the eye, particularly on the sport-tuned se and the other specialty camry, the hybrid. Engineers focused on making the underbody as flat as possible to smooth airflow under the car and reduce noise.  on the se, they also tuned the flow to balance downforce, or the aerodynamic force that presses the car to the pavement, nearly equally over the front and rear tires.  with the camry hybrid, the aerodynamic focus was on efficiency. Unique wheel spats and underbelly pans reduce the coefficient of drag (cd) to a low 0. 27. While the outside has been touched with a splash of pizzazz, the inside has been brushed with shades of elegance. The treatment is not quite up to, say, lexus-level luxury, but, especially in the top-of-the-line xle, this camry sets a high bar on interior polish for mid-price, mid-size sedans.  the cabin is trimmed with a brushed metallic finish in the base, le, se, and hybrid. Real-looking glossy wood grain is used inside the xle, including surrounds for the door-release handles.  the fabric upholstery combines breathable, waffle-texture insets with smooth bolsters and backing. The leather upgrade isn't quite kid glove, but it feels expensive. On the less positive side, the hard plastic covering the roof pillars looks cheap, and the mouse fur headliner disappoints.  the camry is a roomy sedan, with comfortable seats front and rear, though the seat bottoms are short on thigh support for taller occupants. Rear-seat passengers in the xle enjoy a luxury rarely seen in this class: reclining seatbacks.  the sloping hood delivers good sightlines from the driver's seat. The thick c-pillar (that part of the body supporting the roof behind the rear doors), looks less imposing to the driver than from outside the car. Low-profile rear-seat head restraints leave the view in the rearview mirror mostly unblocked. Outside mirrors are placed farther rearwar.

2003 toyota camry review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Seamless, flawless transportation. introductionthe toyota camry is the best-selling car in america, the crown jewel of cars in the auto industry. Toyota tells us the name 'camry' comes from kan-muri, which in japanese means 'crown.' that seems appropriate given that the camry outsells such popular gems as the honda accord and ford taurus.  the camry appears to be a perfect transportation appliance, flawlessly performing its duties, never annoying its owner. It rides smoothly, softly over beat-up city streets. The interior is ergonomically excellent, with big climate and audio knobs that are easy to adjust. The seats are comfortable.  the toyota camry was all-new last year. A longer wheelbase brought significantly increased rear-seat legroom. All models now come with remote keyless entry, while the xle model adds fog lights, and a six-disc cd changer for its jbl audio system. Either way, it comes with air conditioning, power windows, power mirrors, power locks and remote keyless entry, a 60/40 split rear seat, and visor vanity mirrors.  se is a sportier version of the le. Higher-rate springs, shocks, and anti-roll bars contribute to crisper handling, along with higher-effort steering and bigger wheels and tires. Outside, black trim at the front end, a spoiler at the rear, and unique black pearl badging distinguish the se. A three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel and lots of bright trim add zing to the interior. Se lists for $20,310 with the manual gearbox, $21,140 with the automatic.  the cushiest camry is the xle, featuring luxury appointments such as wood-grain trim, power driver and passenger seats, automatic air conditioning, an alarm system, a cargo net, and a rear-window sunshade. All-new last year, the v6 develops 192 horsepower at 5300 rpm, and 209 pounds-feet at 4400. Both engines are all aluminum for light weight.  the le v6 lists for $22,260; the se v6 for $23,700; and the xle v6 for $25,405. Look for an all-new solara to debut as 2004 model.  . walkaroundthe toyota camry was totally redesigned last year, but the new look did not stray too far from that of previous models. Ford lost quite a few sales before retreating to a safer design.  so while toyota claims to have put more excitement into the current camry, in truth it looks a lot like the old camry. Ironically, the most-changed elements are the rear deck and taillights, and these have a distinctly taurus flavor. The front of the camry appears to have a bit of lincoln ls in it, thanks to the way the grille cuts into the top edge of the front bumper.  the camry does present a more sculptured appearance, with slightly flared wheel arches and a distinct dual crease line in the hood, the latter leading nicely into the grille. To some extent its smooth lines camouflage its height; the current car stands two inches taller than the pre-2002 model.  . interiorthe toyota camry has a comfortable interior with controls that are simple and easy to operate. Everything is laid out simply.  radio and climate controls are mounted high in the center of the dash for easy access. Three big knobs mounted prominently in the center of the dashboard are used to manually control heating, ventilation, and air conditioning on se and le models. Xle models get automatic climate control with a smooth tactile feel that reminds us of lexus, which set the modern standard. The stereo uses big buttons and knobs that are easy to operate, whether scanning for radio stations or moving between songs on a cd. A navigation system is available for the xle. We found the audio quality poor on the le's optional jbl system.  the instruments are located in a relatively small pod right in front of the steering wheel, with a large half-moon tachometer and matching speedometer. The fuel and temperature gauges are located within the two larger instruments. Lights and windshield wiper/washer controls are on stalks on the steering column, leaving the left lower edge of the dash free of switches.  camry's dashboard is relatively plain, with no large curved surfaces, and it is set relatively high. The dash blends nicely into the door panels, but the cover for the passenger-side air bag is noticeable as the seams show clearly. Many other manufacturers have managed to make the passenger-side air bag invisible.  a wide center console separates the two front bucket seats and contains useful storage areas. The parking brake on the le and se is also located in the center console, whereas the xle gets a foot-operated parking brake.  rear-seat passengers will find the accommodations quite pleasant for a mid-size passenger car. Head- and legroom have increased compared to the previous camry. The rear seat splits 60/40, allowing long objects to pass through from the trunk, although the opening is smaller than it might be. The trunk itself is a decent size and shape. Gooseneck hinges steal valuable space, but are hidden under a cover, reducing the chance that they will damage trunk contents as the lid is closed.  . driving impressiontoyota knows how to build quiet cars with a comfortable ride. Toyota's lexus division has excelled in this area and this expertise appears to have worked its way over to the camry. Engines are quieter than in pre-2002 models, while an innovative engine mounting system further reduces vibration. There is nothing untoward or strange about the camry; it does everything just right. An enthusiast driver would complain that it lacks character, but for the average driver that's a plus. The 2. 4-liter inline-4 is inexpensive and fuel-efficient and provides plenty of power. Computer logic controls the automatic transmission; the car can tell when it is going up hill or down hill and the transmission shifts gears accordingly. It can hold a lower gear longer when necessary to avoid the annoying shifting up and down that occurs in some automatics.  the ride is pleasant, verging on luxurious, with enough cushioning to make passengers feel comfortable. The steering is light but not sloppy. That means it is not connected directly to the engine by a cable; instead, it activates a sensor connected to a computer, just like the controls in modern aircraft. One advantage of this arrangement is that the optional vehicle skid control system can take over the throttle in an emergency and apply just the right amount of throttle and braking to keep the vehicle on a more stable path.  . summarytoyota admits that while few people aspire to own a camry, lots of people recommend a camry to their friends. The camry is what's known as a safe buy. It is in many ways an unremarkable car, except for its total lack of identifiable flaws. It toyota has tried hard to make the latest camry a little more exciting while at the same time making sure it will still transport its occupants from a to b and back without any drama, nor any worries about reliability, year in and year out.  so the toyota camry is not be as exciting as the nissan altima or volkswagen passat. That's why the camry will likely continue as america's most popular new car.  . model lineuple 5-speed m. 2003 toyota tacoma review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Toyota tacoma boasts a heritage of solid service as a work truck along with a hard-earned reputation as a winning off-road race truck.  toyota makes a tacoma to fit almost any work-related or recreational pursuit. The tacoma line starts with a simple two-wheel-drive work truck loaded with nothing but quality, durability and reliability. The price and content of the sr5 package varies with cab, engine, and driveline. V6 double cabs and v6 xtracab 4x4s can be ordered with a similar limited package, which includes most sr5 content plus power windows, locks and mirrors. Again the precise content depends on the body style.  a stepside bed option 310) features bulging rear fenders and a small step behind the doors (not available on double cabs).  prerunner is a 4x2 truck with an off-road suspension. Prerunners are available in standard, xtracab, or double cab configurations, and with either the 2. 7-liter inline-4 or 3. 4-liter v6. Prerunners start at $14,015.  xtracab s-runner is a low-riding street sports model with a suspension tuned for handling on pavement. S-runner comes with the 3. 4-liter v6, five-speed transmission, sport seats, and color-keyed trim.  the trd (toyota racing development) off-road package can be added to 2wd prerunner or 4wd xtracab models. The trd package adds bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, increased-rate front and rear springs, a larger stabilizer bar, p265/70r16 b. Goodrich tires, overfenders (color-keyed on limited models), and special graphics.  also available from trd is a fully warranted, dealer-installed supercharger for the 3. 4-liter v6. The limited and the s-runner each had the 3. 4-liter v6 and xtracab body style. But that's where the similarities ended.  the 4x4 limited has a tough, off-road look to it, with big, beefy tires and enough ground clearance to hop over medium-sized rocks and stumps. The s-runner is much lower to the ground, and is graced with bodywork add-ons that go well with its handsome five-spoke alloy wheels and low-profile tires. The xtracab has a little more legroom (42. 8 inches versus 41. 7), plus room to recline the seat.  standard in xtracabs is a 60/40 split bench front seat, comfortable for driver and passenger. The bucket seats in the xtracab limited we test-drove felt too big for the cab, giving the space a cramped feeling. But they sure were comfortable, and that lumbar support in the driver's seat was a godsend on a long drive. The cloth trim seems to be of good quality. In the extended rear cab area there's a little table that folds up to serve as either a cup holder or as a support for a child-restraint seat.  double cabs are reasonably roomy in the back-seat area. There's lots of knee room and good headroom, but the upright seatback makes the space most suitable for short trips. White-faced gauges are available on some models. Controls well placed and functional. An assist strap is provided on the driver's-side windshield pillar. The tacoma has a pull-out hand brake, which is inconvenient and seems old-fashioned. They drive quite a bit differently, but all do a good job in the roles for which they are designed.  the two-wheel-drive work truck rides smoothly and handles reasonably well. Off-road versions offer impressive handling and capability in the rough stuff. The toyota 2. 4-liter is economical to run, with an epa-estimated city/highway mileage of 22/25 mpg when matched with a five-speed manual transmission. It delivers 190 horsepower at 4800 rpm, with 220 pounds-feet of torque at 3600 rpm. Even at that it's still reasonably economical, with an epa city/highway mileage rating of 18/22 for a 4x2 with a five-speed manual.  the five-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and makes the tacoma more fun to drive. The tacoma feels like it would go anywhere, and get there in a big hurry. The trd suspension is fantastic, whether going slow or hauling. Even deep, bounding ruts failed to upset the handling in medium-speed corners. The trd tacoma rides reasonably well, though it's stiff at low speeds. That stiffness pays off at higher speeds, however. Like all pickups, it feels much smoother with a little weight in the bed. That's a convenience when a good road goes bad. The available push-button locking differential forces the rear wheels to turn at the same speed. This enables the tacoma to walk out of ankle-deep sand with absolutely no trouble. The locking rear differential is indispensable for driving in an area prone to mud and snow.  on dry pavement, the tacoma 4x4 holds corners surprisingly well. Its 190-horsepower 3. 4-liter v6 produces a deep-sounding (but not obnoxious) exhaust note. The sport-tuned suspension setup includes tokico gas shock absorbers, increased-rate springs, and front and rear stabilizer bars. Ride height is reduced by one inch from the standard 4x2. Though a little jouncy when empty, the ride never felt harsh, and handling was superb. As long as the weather doesn't get too slippery, the s-runner is as entertaining as anything we've recently driven. It is so much fun that we kept searching for reasons to go for a spin.  we used an s-runner to move some furniture from maryland to virginia and, like all pickups, it rode better when loaded down. Overall, the tacoma is an impressive package.  there are bigger trucks and there are more powerful trucks than the tacoma. But there are few 4x4 pickups that offer th. Did engineers expect such solid, pragmatic progress to take place (and no car is a better example than this Avalon), or did they expect the public to want to be blasted into the next century by cars akin to spaceships.
